I can’t sacrifice my career for marriage -Nse Ikpe-Etim

20121019-131500.jpg

A few years back, Nollywood actress, Nse Ikpe-Etim, took a break from acting, to work in the banking. Ikpe-Etim, who is a professional chef, later delved into the fashion industry before made a comeback in Emem Isong’s hit movie, Reloaded.
But nowadays it takes an intelligent script and a thorough filmmaker to entice her away from her home and family, as well her favourite place, the kitchen.
And the latest film script to have engrossed the slender role interpreter is the Rita Dominic/ Mildred Okwo’s satirical comedy flick, The Meeting, in which she plays, Bolarinwa, the high-flying girlfriend of a serving federal minister.
Although she appears in just a few scenes in the film, the actress is quick to correct anyone who thinks that it was an irrelevant role.
“It was not a minor role, I beg to differ because one scene can make or mar a movie and one scene can give you an Oscar or AMAA. So I like to say that every role is increasingly important as long as you are an actor. You can have guest appearances, cameos, lead and supporting roles. My role was a cameo,’’ she says.
As she speaks glowingly about her role in the movie which premieres today, Ikpe-Etim almost immediately switches into character and then in a smattering of Yoruba language saying, “Mo need cash gan just like Bolarinwa, my taste is very high,” bursting into a fit of laughter.
It then becomes almost impossible to decipher when she is actually being serious with the responses and when it is just a tease. But this is quite understandable for the actress who spent her formative years in primary and secondary schools in Jos, Kaduna and Ilorin as she loves to have a good laugh.
The societal pressure on Nollywood spinsters keeps mounting by the day and has been attributed as the reason behind the scandals and divorce tales trailing a number of stars. While there may be a tendency for some persons to take her jovial nature for granted, Ikpe-Etim says she does not take lightly issues that pertain to her still being single having come this far in her career and so naturally puts up a defence.
“The thing is I have stated my thoughts on marriage. It is a good thing but it has to be kept holy. Who says I am being delayed? I do not subscribe to divorce because I am so catholic and I was brought up that way. I am not in a relationship because I won’t have time to make other people happy and make ‘him’ happy. I have chosen who I want to make happy,my fans. It’s very early in my career and I can’t compromise because I can’t feed him. I don’t do trial and error, every man that has been in my life has been for a reason and season and I am sure they are all fine. It is something that you do not out of societal pressure, not because your parents want you to do it but because you are ready and you have found the one person that you cannot dare to live without,” she explains.
Just like many other thespians who have found solace in Nollywood, Ikpe-Etim, who studied Theatre- Arts at the University of Calabar, says she misses the adrenalin rush that comes with being on stage.
“My background in theatre has helped in a way because you know what you want. More so theatre does not teach you acting for film. Acting for film, is a different thing from being on stage. They are two different ball games. You have to be lucky that the camera loves you and whatever it is, you can elicit any sort of feelings from your viewers. Theatre is exhilarating. It is almost orgasmic.”

Why More Students May Be Killed!

LASU: Why More Students May Be Killed!

Not a few Nigerians were jolted by the news of the murder of a fast rising hip hop artiste, Damola Olaniyan aka Damouche at the gate of the Lagos State University, Ojo on Thursday. Damouche was shot twice in the head, apparently from a high caliber weapon and at close range too.
Though the police have intervened and suspects have been arrested, there are fears that the war might just have started. Street Journal’s findings revealed that the cause of the shooting was a clash between members of the Black Axe and Buccaneers confraternities.
Some sources on campus also disclosed that members of the Supreme Eiye Confraternity had issues with the other two groups making it difficult for the uninitiated to “know who is killing who”. In what appeared to be a reprisal attack, another undergraduate of the institution who was simply identified as Kabiru was killed late on Sunday around Abeokuta Street in Okokomaiko, bu suspected members of the Buccaneers Confraternity. Some students were later arrested at a party in Ishashi, Okokomaiko.
Street Journal’s findings revealed that more blood may still flow because the supremacy battle between the cult groups has it has its root in the indoctrination members are given in their various groups. As such the supremacy battle may continue for a while. Findings reveal that one of the tenets in the creed of the Neo Black Movement, otherwise known as Black Axe is “forgiveness is a sin”.
In other words, any insult or injustice meted out to the brotherhood or any of its members must be avenged without delay or any option of forgiveness. The Buccaneers on the other hand are known to be firm believers in their “no price, no pay” doctrine. Their simply rule is that whoever comes looking for their trouble must be given trouble in full measure.
A student disclosed to Street Journal that ss it stands now, “the scores currently sand at 1-1 which is not a good way to end a game, everybody is afraid because more attacks will definitely happen and at times, even the innocent can get hurt”.

I Was Raped By My Father, Uncle, Teacher And School Mates”

I Was Raped By My Father, Uncle, Teacher And School Mates”

I have been raped at various times by my father, uncle and our driver. My primary six teacher also had his fill of me.
While in secondary school, two boys ganged raped me in the classroom. Although all of them including my father, always came back to plead for my forgiveness after raping me, but such pleas don’t erase what they did to me. They all did it once. Till date, I avoid my father like a plague. He too is always very uncomfortable around me just like my uncle who nobody has seen since he came to plead with me. He stays in Jos and has refused to come home.
Now I am in my 300 level and the only way I enjoy sex is for a man to be very rough with me. This worked for me until recently when I fell in love with my boyfriend.
Honestly, love is happening to me for the first time since I became an adult. All my life, it has been animalistic urge; have sex and walk away from it all before it becomes too complex.
I have never had any serious relationship in my entire life because I see men as wicked, opportunists and animals.
Given what I feel for my boyfriend, I know I am very much in love with him but at times when I remember all the abuses I went through I wonder if this relationship is worth it.
At times too, when I recount the many times I was raped by my father and all the other men, I wonder why me. Is there something about me that made all these men rape me? Once I went to a church where the pastor called me out of the congregation and told me to see him after service. When I saw him after service, as if looking into the mirror he told me everything about my life. since I haven’t told anybody the story of my life, I knew he was real.
He told me it was done by my grandmother to destroy my life because she never approved of my father marrying my mother. He said she put an evil mark on me to instigate men to violating me at will.
He conducted three days deliverance sessions for me. It was after that I met my boyfriend. Despite the signals I give him, he has resisted making love to me. He expresses the desire to marry me and has taken the steps of introducing me to his parents. He graduated three years ago and works with the energy sector. Although he has an idea of all that happened to me, I haven’t given him the entire details of the many men who raped me. Also, it is proper to tell him about my father since he has met with him when he came with parents and extended family members for a mini introduction.
Deep down, I have this urge to come clean with the story of my past. Another thing is how to respond to his love making when we eventually make love. Would it be proper to ask him to be violent with me as is my custom?
Sometimes too, all the old hatred I have for men resurfaces. At such times, I keep away from him but it would be difficult to do once we are married. I am just confused about it all and what to do?

GAY MINISTRY IN NIGERIA

Holy Spirit Led me To Start This Church”- General Overseer Of Nigerian Gay Church

Despite the Federal Government’s intolerance for Gay activities in Nigeria, Reverend Jide Macaulay, has damned all consequences and reopened his gay church, House of Rainbow in Lagos.
The primary vision of the gay church is to reach out to sexual minorities in Nigeria, UK, and around the world.
Rev Rowland Jide Macaulay is a confirmed and ordained Pastor who founded the House Of Rainbow Church in 2006. He openly held Sunday services in a Lagos hotel hall decked out with rainbow flags until the public revolted against the church.
He then fled to the UK after death threats.
Read Pastor Jide’s views on homo-sexuality below.
For me I have always been gay and I never became gay.
I became aware of my same sex attraction whilst living in Nigeria at the age of seven. Boys flirt with each other unknowing all the time and it was at this stage that I was more aware of my emotional, physical, mental and sexual attraction to boys.
I was 14 when I had my first sex with a guy, it was filled with curiousity, passion, embarassment and guilt as will with any heterosexual having sex for the first time.
By this age I had become a youth leader in the church and had spent time reading the bible including discovering chapters that “condemned” homosexuality.
Imagine the furore of my life? Now I have to be discrete, secretive and live a lie. When I look back at my life it never stopped my same sex attractions.
Fast forward thirty years, I am now fully confident that being gay is my natural being and I regretted ever trying to be straight.
I regretted that I did not get the education and appropriate spiritual development to be a gay man. I can understand that and that is why I am determined that the short life I may live in this world I trust God for the development of inclusive Christian education to enable the freedom of the mind, body, soul and spirit.
Recently, my father asked me to prove that homosexuality is genetics. I just looked at him and pointed to myself, “ME” you made me, you gave birth to a homosexual boy he was anxious to know more, so I asked him to prove to me that God is real, not that I don’t know but if we were to play “doubting Thomas”, lets lay all the cards out.
My homosexuality is real, I am gay and I did not become gay, just like I am black and I did not become black. This is a great way to move forward in life and let the world know that they may hate us but God Adores Us.
House Of Rainbow Fellowship is an inclusive Christian community, that welcomes all people and does not discriminate against LGBTI people (of faith or no faith).
I am proud that the Holy Spirit has led me to start this group, (nearly five years). We are growing with passion and relevance and it is my hope that we would be able to advance the learning and inclusion of all people.
I love myself and it is my daily prayer and hope that millions of LGBTI people around the world, their friends and families will come to understand and love them

Man Beats Wife’s 8 months Pregnant Friend to Death

A middle-aged pregnant woman, Mrs. Lateefat Odediran, was last Saturday allegedly beaten to death by the husband of one of her friends at Ibala area of Ede, Osun State.
